Chronic pain is big business. Over 100 million Americans suffer from chronic pain accounting for over $500 Billion annually in treatments and lost productivity. And, the primary solution is addictive pharmaceuticals. No wonder the U.S. has an opioid crisis that causes 80 deaths every day.
Our program is a Case Study of Oska Wellness.
Oska is a medical device company that is disrupting the chronic pain management market with a clinically proven, non-invasive, non-drug, wearable technology that relieves pain, inflammation and improves mobility with no side effects. Oska intends to change the way people who suffer from chronic pain manage their pain and live better lives.

Oska Underlying Science, Technology and IP
The wearable Oska® Pulse is powered by Pulsed Electromagnetic Field technology (PEMF) utilized for decades in clinics to stimulate tissue growth and reduce pain. Its efficacy is supported by over 10,000 clinical studies. PEMF acts at the cellular level to restore the electrical potential across membranes to stimulate cellular metabolism.
Oska has developed a unique application of PEMF Technology:
Go-to-Market Strategy
Presentation by: Greg Houlgate, Founder, Chief BD & Product Officer, OSKA

2) Post-sales compliance in culture that expects immediate relief, with extended need for use to achieve results and integration into a patient’s life style
The Case Study Format
Many of the issues encountered by start-ups are quite similar. Learn new solutions for your business through our case study program. The company will present an Executive Overview and their key challenges. Then an assembled “Board of Directors” takes over and suggests possible solutions. But you can too — the audience often sees even better solutions.

Water Technology and the Environment Crisis in San Diego. Featuring Steve Chapple, Founder, Intellectual Capital Media, Author, and Journalist.
We’ll start off with 30 minutes of networking over beer, wine and snacks. Then watch a short TEDx video on ways to avoid catastrophic drought. Then we’ll open up for audience questions and have discussion with Steve as the resident expert.
Steve Chapple is co-author of the new book, BREAKPOINT: Reckoning with America’s Environmental Crises (Yale Univ. Press.) He writes the Intellectual Capital columns in newspapers and is a Visiting Scholar at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, as well as Executive Director of the San Diego Unified STEAM Leadership Series, and a fellow at the Samuel Lawrence Foundation. Mr Chapple will be signing copies of his book after the event.
Thank you BDO for being our gracious and convenient event host.
More on BREAKPOINT:
Eminent ecologist Jeremy B. C. Jackson and award-winning journalist Steve Chapple traveled the length of the Mississippi River interviewing farmers, fishermen, scientists, and policymakers to better understand the mounting environmental problems ravaging the United States. Along their journey, which quickly expands to California, Florida, and New York, the pair uncovered surprising and profound connections between ecological systems and environmental crises across the country. Artfully weaving together independent research and engaging storytelling, Jackson and Chapple examine the looming threats from recent hurricanes and fires, industrial agriculture, river mismanagement, extreme weather events, drought, and rising sea levels that are pushing the country toward the breaking point of ecological and economic collapse, in their new book Breakpoint: Reckoning with America’s Environmental Crises.
Yet, despite these challenges, the authors provide optimistic and practical solutions for addressing these multidimensional issues to achieve greater environmental stability, human well-being, and future economic prosperity. With a passionate call to action, they look hopefully toward emerging and achievable solutions to preserve the country’s future.

BioFluidica’s next generation diagnostic platform, provides a non-invasive procedure that can be applied to many diseases where there is a need for improved diagnostics. The platform has been validated for six different cancer types, stroke, and infectious diseases. In the cancer field alone, there is a tremendous need to improve diagnostic capabilities. Globally, there are more than 14 million reported cancer cases per year. Each case being not just a number, but associated with a story of confusion, financial challenges, despair and loss. In the year 2030 it is projected that globally 11 million people will die of cancer. In the U.S. alone, there were more than 500,000 deaths and 1.66 million new cases reported in 2014. Direct cancer care costs in the U.S. have been estimated at $125 billion in 2010 and expected to grow to $200 billion by 2020.
Better cancer detection, and subsequent personalized treatment, precision medicine, are keys to improve patient treatment and outcomes. Detection of novel biomarkers, such as Circulating Tumor Cells, CTCs, are leading the way to improved diagnostics. The global market for CTC based diagnostics alone is estimated to reach almost $9 billion by 2018, with a compounded annual growth rate of 18.9% for 2013 – 2018*) . In order to improve the survival rate for many cancer diseases, the field of oncology needs better therapies and optimized personalized patient treatment. This will require the evolution of better technologies. As 5G networks emerge, speculation is growing about what use cases are possible. In its peak hype cycle, 5G promises to be everything for everyone. In reality, it offers three distinct capabilities: 1.) ultra-high speeds for enhanced broadband, 2.) ultra-low latency for mission-critical applications and 3.) massive internet of things (IoT) for billions of devices.
In the early phases of 5G, when it gets off the ground this year, cost-effective broadband data capacity will be its best use case. As the technology continues to evolve watch for vertical industries — healthcare, smart cities, automotive, entertainment, computing and manufacturing — to experience revolutionary changes.
At the forefront of this revolution is San Diego-based XCOM, a new idea from some of the brightest minds formerly at Qualcomm. And make no mistake, their new company could be just as big as the one they left.
Hear directly from Anton Monk, responsible for Technology Strategy and Business Development at XCOM. Joining Dr Monk is one of XCOM’s use cases from David Pinn, VP Strategy, Brain Corp. We’ll also hear about Smart Cities applications from CUBIC’s head of Global Product Management, Erik Vlugt.

The San Diego beer scene is one of the best known in the country, with over 150 breweries pouring over $1 billion into the local economy. Some trace it’s origins after homebrewing was legalized in 1978, and California allowed brewpubs to operate as early as 1982. Then in 1989, Karl Strauss opened it’s Brewery & Grill, creating the catalyst for San Diego’s craft beer rise. From Karl Strauss, you can trace the San Diego beer scene, with several of it’s the original employees opening well-known breweries, including Pizza Port Brewery (which spawned Port Brewing and Lost Abbey, among others) and the Home Brew Mart, which gave rise to Ballast Point Brewing Company. Then in 1994, Chris White, opened White Labs, one of the world’s preeminent yeast labs creating “unprecedented access to world class yeast” and “custom yeast strains.” Learn important business lessons from leading brewers at our panel discussion. Plus, we’ll have an extended networking period for beer tastings.
Questions for the panel:
Moderator: Tom Nickel from Nickel Brewing and O’Brien’s Brewery

Panel Discussion
Who should attend?
This session is for chief technologists, R&D, product managers, developers, and designers who want to better understand the principles of Privacy by Design.
California has two new laws that go into effect January 1: the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and SB 327, an IOT security law which mandates that manufacturers that sell or offer to sell a connected device in California equip the device with “reasonable security features.”
This makes California the first state to specifically regulate the security of connective devices, which are commonly referred to as Internet of Things (IoT) devices and the CCPA is one of most comprehensive state privacy laws to go into effect since the EU enacted General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in 2018.
In contrast to California data privacy laws protecting only personal information, the new security law aims to protect the security of both IoT devices, and any information contained on IoT devices.
Given this focus on legislating privacy and security we should be thinking ahead and addressing these principles during the design process. While SB 327 focuses on IoT specifically (this includes connected things such as connected cars, industrial devices, retail point-of-sale or medical devices, to name a few), privacy can impact other products and apps as well, including social apps, media, and telecommunications. Across the board, these two new acts have an impact on a wide number of products and services.
Examples where Privacy by Design was needed
When we look at the Facebook data privacy scandal around the collection and sharing of personally identifiable information on as many as 87 million people or read in recent news about hackers who have been able to spy on children via popular “smart home” security apps, we realize that even honestly designed products can end up with unintended consequences. As our world becomes more mobile and more connected, how can developers build privacy and security into their products to keep their customers safe and secure?
Panel Focus
This panel will consist of technical, product, and design professionals who will focus on how we can apply design principles that will make our new products safe and secure.
What is Privacy by Design?
The term “Privacy by Design” means “data protection through technology design.” “Privacy by Design” along with “Privacy by Default” are one of the key changes that were brought into the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) that went into effect in Europe in May 2018.
“Privacy by Design” and “Privacy by Default” have been frequently discussed topics related to data protection. The first thoughts of “Privacy by Design” were expressed in the 1970s and were incorporated in the 1990s into the RL 95/46/EC data protection directive. According to recital 46 in this Directive, Technical and Organizational Measures (TOM) must be taken already at the time of planning a processing system to protect data safety.
Startups and New Product Introductions: MVP vs. Privacy / Security
As entrepreneurs we tend to think in terms of Minimally Viable Product or MVP when we first launch a product or app, and typically instantiating privacy or security at that point is thought to take up too much time or investment and risk “holding us back” in a competitive space. Yet that leaves a window of vulnerability. When should we consider designing in privacy and security? Is there “right” timing?
For that answer and more, join us Wednesday, January 15.

The majority of the discussion about “a new normal” from the pandemic has been dominated by the race for a vaccine and the availability of cost-effective, high volume, rapid testing. A less discussed dimension is the development of novel technologies for disinfection, both of static object and surface cleansing, but also about commercial air purification applications.
Join the MIT Enterprise Forum of San Diego as we host an exciting virtual discussion on September 30th with RESONŌ’s founder and CEO, Hao Hu, and COO, Kaha Aznaurashvili. RESONŌ is a start-up tackling this challenge working at the convergence of virology and physics.
In initial studies, RESONŌ’s foundational technology has been shown superior to ultra-violet light purification methods and others presently used and can be applied not only to the COVID-19 and future pandemic challenges, but seasonal viruses as well.
Topics certain to be discussed:
And, if we are fortunate, RESONŌ may share some of its latest experimental data (for those who are into that) that help bolster their claim to deliver the most effective, safest, and fastest methods to disinfect air and surfaces.

Visionary… Gamer… Esports Team Owner…Event Owner…Developer
Hector Rosario grew up in South Florida playing Football, Soccer and Basketball as well as being a gamer. After deciding a career as a professional athlete in traditional sports was a no-go, Hector started focusing on his passion for gaming and today is considered by some to be one of the godfathers of what is now eSports. As first a professional DOTA 2 player (this was before gamers were called athletes), Hector not only organized some of the original leagues and competed in events, but found he had a talent for building teams and developing players, many of whom are still competing today.
In 2012, Hector retired from professional gaming and took advantage of his experience and vision for what esports was becoming, to launch his first company, FlipSid3 Tactics. FlipSid3 Tactics (FT) is a professional esports organization with currently over 20 Championships Titles across 4 divisions. Besides being Founder and CEO, Hector began coaching his young players across these divisions as well as produced some of the first professional gaming events in the US, Brazil and India.
Over the following three years, as the esports industry experienced exponential growth and the competition for solid players for teams skyrocketed. Hector recognized the need for tools and programs that could gather data and stats and provide analytics to help recruit those top players to his team. This led to the launch of his second company, Stats Helix, which today is a tech company using data to enhance player performances and subsequent gaming experiences. Today Stats Helix is the go to for most major esports events as well as is the data and analytics platform used by Twitch, the streaming channel exclusive to the esports industry.
Having changed the esports industry with his “moneyball” approach to player development and having created the interactivity for digital broadcasting, Hector is moving on to his next venture, Ascent Sports. Ascent Sports is positioned to be the industry standard for stats and analytics, digital streaming enhancements and game data expertise. While the big data companies have game data, they do not have the expertise on how to customize and use the data to improve player performance, the player and viewer experience and improve and optimize game development.

There’s no denying that the cannabis industry is emerging as the biggest new industry in years. It’s been two years since we last covered this industry, so let’s check in and see what has changed, what remains the same, and what new opportunities exist.
And, in San Diego, that is no exception. But what does the research say about cannabis use? Who are the cannabis consumers? Where is cannabis making a difference? What business hurdles do companies deal with on a daily basis? What are the industry regulations and the barriers to entry? What does it take to be successful?
The MIT Enterprise Forum of San Diego is excited to host this intriguing update. Please join us on December 16th at 5:30pm PST.

Brian Buckley, CEO/Founder at Helmand Valley Growers Company
As a Special Operations Team Commander with Marine Raiders, Bryan led multiple teams in deployments to Operation Enduring Freedom-Trans Sahara (Africa), South East Asia, and Operation Enduring Freedom-Afghanistan (Helmand Province). Developed rapport with numerous host nation forces, enhanced capability and capacity within the host nation units, and briefed US Ambassadors. Led a 20 man Marine Raider Team to Afghanistan that mentored, trained, and conducted over 40 combat operations with an Afghan Special Operations Battalion. Bryan also deployed twice to Operation Iraqi Freedom with Marine Infantry and Marine Reconnaissance.
Bryan is a Founder and CEO of Helmand Valley Growers Company. HVGC was founded by United States Special Operations Veterans (Marine Raiders). Since its inception, HVGC has been in discussions with some of the cannabis industry’s top researchers and has developed a veteran based protocol to effectively prove the benefits of medical cannabis. HVGC is supported and essentially ran by three Marine Raiders that served following 9-11.
As a service disabled veteran owned business, HVGC is intimately aware of the daily challenges that our fellow veteran brothers and sisters face as a result of their time spent on the battlefield. Some of these wounds are not visible to the naked eye.
HVGC began its outreach into the veteran community by observing first-hand and listening to the suffering of our veterans. We knew right then that our cause was worthy; and that our mission was defined. As our research progressed, the answer to this crisis became clear: develop alternate medical solutions for those suffering with pain, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, sleep disorders, and most critically, are at significant risk of suicide. We care about those who suffer and believe that medical cannabis is the way of the future to help those in need. The recreational cannabis and branding will be used to assist in accomplishing these goals and ultimately serve as a profit center for HVGC.
